M3gan

This will be my first official Rapid Review (if you missed what that is, click the link), hence why it's much shorter!

As this review is delayed a bit since I wanted to wait until after the Rath Awards, it's obvious there has been a lot of noise about M3gan already, mostly positive. Even my theater was packed to the brim - granted, it was a Saturday late afternoon - and seemed to enjoy themselves.

I'm less enthralled by it, but mildly excited about the potential series it will likely create because, well...$$. M3gan certainly has some meme-able moments and is arguably funnier than it is scary, but aside from those elements it's a bit surprising to witness its impact, as it feels very flash-in-a-pan-esque.

As a horror film, it's dreadfully average with maybe 1-2 solid scares and almost no memorable kills, all watered down by the PG-13 rating. Sure, the sci-fi concept helps to give it a "unique" modern edge, but it's ultimately forgettable. I will, however, be excited to see where future sequels go because I think there's some potential, a la Planet of the Apes style takeover.

Despite what you may have heard, you're better off catching up on some 2022 highlights (watch RRR on Netflix, people!), or getting to see Avatar: The Way of Water in theaters while you still can. M3gan is an overhyped January "dump".

Rapid Rath's Review Score | 6.5/10
