Finding Nemo 3D

There are some movies that contain a little something I like to call magic.

Magic is that moment where you are transported from one world to another and you really dont know when or how it happened. Star Wars, Harry Potter, and Lord of the Rings are prime examples of this.

Finding Nemo is another.

I still remember the first time I saw Finding Nemo (with my mom actually!) and how wowed I was as a 13 year old. I was completely transported to an underwater fantasy land known as the Great Barrier Reef and introduced to one of the finest group of characters that Pixar has ever created, with only the Toy Story franchise topping it. It instantly became one of my favorite Pixar movies and the world agreed, causing it to be one of the most successful Pixar movies of all time (both in theaters and home sales).

"Jellyman takin on the jellies! Saweeeeet." Crush and Squirt:
the coolest father and son ever
Now that's a scary set of teeth...
Now, almost a decade later, Disney is continuing along with its 3D re-releases of some of its most popular films. First there was The Lion King, then Beauty and the Beast, and now Finding Nemo (just an FYI, Monsters Inc. is next). And this brings me to the only thing that I did not like about Finding Nemo 3D: the actual 3D. It wasn't bad by any means. In fact, it was so well done that I had to remind myself that I was watching 3D. And that's the problem: the 3D doesnt add much depth at all. While Titanic 3D added several layers of depth and stunned me with how it transformed the movie, Finding Nemo's 3D attempt still seems very 2D unfortunately. The good news? That Finding Nemo is still as fun as ever on the big screen.
Easily the most colorful movies ever made.
"`Ello there. Name's Bruce!"
"Fish are friends, not food!"
By now, I would imagine that most of my readers have seen Finding Nemo. I dont need to tell you that it is one of the most imaginative movies ever made. It features ideas, images, jokes, and plot lines that exemplify Pixar at the very top of their game. I dont need to tell you that the characters are perfect. Everyone will remember Nemo, Marlin, Bruce, Gill, Bloat, Peach, Nigel, Crush, Squirt, the terrifying dark-water monster-fish, the jellies, the "MINE!" seagulls, the "Hay! Hay!" crabs, whales, DARLA!, and of course, the always-forgetting, Dory. I also dont need to tell you that it is one of the prettiest movies ever made. The animation is uncanny in realism and the ocean is recreated in painstaking detail. And the movie probably features the use of thousands and thousands of different colors. Not many animation films amaze me technically on the sixth or seventh viewing, but Finding Nemo is certainly one of them.

Dory speaking whale = one of the funniest moments ever.
"Maybe I should try Humpback...HELLLLOOOO THERE
SIRRRRRR!!! DOOO YOUUU KNOW WHERE --"
"Swim away!"
"Oh look! Krill!"
If you love Finding Nemo, you will still love it in 3D. Don't expect much added depth or any "pop-out" moments. But do expect one of the funniest, prettiest, and most entertaining movies Pixar has ever released. And as a plus, it also helps you to learn how to speak several dialects of whale!

Many people have their list of Pixar movies. So just for fun, my top 5 are as follows:

1) Up
2) Toy Story trilogy (yes, that's a cop-out I know)
3) Finding Nemo
4) Wall-E
5) The Incredibles

Pros:

  • Characters that are timeless. When someone quotes Dory or Bruce, everyone knows what they are talking about
  • Fantastic animation. Scary how real the fish movements look
  • A great story that teaches us about living life and not worrying all the time
  • The world Pixar was able to create is nothing short of fascinating and truly creates movie magic
  • Colorful to the 100th degree. I cant think of a single movie that gets even close to matching Finding Nemo in this category
  • Hilarious. Probably one of Pixar's funniest movies
Cons:
  • The 3D is well done, but nothing special. Somewhat disappointing after the 3D in The Lion King and Titanic added more layers
  • The fact that a sequel is still 4 years away

Rath's Review Score: 10/10 -- Instant Classic
