You would think that a comedy with Steve Carell, Jim Carrey, and Steve Buscemi would actually have been...you know...funny. A deep part of me was kind of even hoping for a Zoolander-esque surprise. Travelling into the world of magicians has to be funnier than this doesnt it?
Apparently not because The Incredible Burt Wonderstone is not only unfunny, it's kinda bad, dumb, unnecessary...whatever you want to call it. And with a movie with this much star power, consider me VERY surprised.
I am not really sure where to start with where Burt Wonderstone went wrong, so I guess I will start where it went right. Particularly, Jim Carrey is pretty funny as the extreme magician, Steve Gray, who is somewhat of a Criss Angel spoof. I figure that his bits would have been funnier had the trailers not shown basically all but two of his stunts. I really thought that the movie would elaborate the tricks further past what I saw in the trailers, but nope, not really. Regardless, at this point in his career, Carrey is comedic royalty and it's great seeing him. Not to mention, Im sure he is going to absolutely steal the show in Kick Ass 2 come August. The other good thing about Burt Wonderstone is Olivia Wilde. She is so damn attractive that it is almost painful. I'm saying it right now: she is the prettiest actress in Hollywood presently (yes, even more than Blake Lively at this point). Her character is likable in the movie, but really, she is just there for eye candy although she does good with the script/part she is given.

Jim Carrey is always funny...even when he is holding in 12 days of urine |

Someday Olivia Wilde will be Olivia Rath, or Olivia Wilde-Rath...or Olivia Rath-Wilde. Whatever she prefers really. |

1 of these 3 magicians made me laugh. Ill give you a hint: it was the one with long hair |

Steve Carell trying to escape his mediocre career since his departure on The Office. Lets hope that Anchorman 2 is the key to escaping that glass case of emotion! |
I'll admit that I am being really harsh on Burt Wonderstone, but that's because I am angry. This is a film that had so much potential. Its cast is top-notch (I mean you have Jim Carrey for God's sake!) and on paper its premise sounds like it could be absolutely hilarious. But when you get a terrible script and a stupid story, this is what you get. At one point in the movie, Alan Arkin's aging magician says something to the effect that magic is that moment where you amaze people with something they weren't expecting.
If only The Incredible Burt Wonderstone could have been as magical!
Pros:
- It has a FEW funny moments. 75% of them include Jim Carrey and there isn't much show for him to steal, but I would say that he steals the show
- It actually started to win me over a bit with its final 20 minutes. It ends on a very high note and I would say that the during-credits-scene is probably the funniest
- Olivia Wilde. She at least gave me something to look at since I wasn't laughing
- No but seriously...Olivia Wilde
Cons:
- The script is atrocious. It was not written for its stars which is mind boggling to me since it has a ton of star power
- They gave away most of Jim Carrey's stunts in the trailers
- Apparently the magic community is undergoing a very large and real crisis of "extreme" magic taking over the more "classic" style of magic! I don't care about it in real life and I didn't care about it in the movie
- I really didn't expect much from this movie to start with because it was kind of flying under my radar, but seriously with this much potential, this effort is just really disappointing
Rath's Review Score: 3.5/10
Although I was hoping it was going to good, I figured it was going to suck. Thanks for keeping from wasting my money and time Jordan!
ReplyDeleteMovie Fact #156: Olivia Wilde makes anything better.
-James
That's what Im here for! It was only $4 for me so it wasn't too painful.
DeleteAnd I laughed far too hard at that movie fact. Probably because it is so true. I can only imagine how much better my already pretty-stellar life would be if only it had Olivia Wilde!
P.S. I still cant comment on your blog, but I am fairly certain it is my crapola computer. Rest assured that when I get a new one in June or if the problem resolves itself, you will see countless comments from me. Loved the Dark Knight Rises parody you posted the other day! "Seriously Gary! Pizza? Gotham City's not even known for it!" Priceless.
Glad you thought it was funny! Yep, just about every dude's dream.
DeleteThat's really weird. Do you have trouble commenting on other blogs?
Haha, yeah, that's my favorite part.

I sometimes have trouble commenting on others' blogs. My guess is that it is some type of cookie or something that is preventing me from doing so. My computer and Blogger dont get along very well as of late, like I said, it needs to be upgraded ASAP.
Delete"When I say NO you say SURVIVORS...NO..."
"You suck Bane!"
"Who said that? Cut the music....kill them all."
A shame it's a major failure with the talent assembled. I was actually looking foward to it because I like the cast but sounds like I'm just in for a letdown.
ReplyDeleteA big one. Even a day later I am still kind of in shock over how unfunny the whole thing was. Oh well...too bad! I'd wait for it on TV or Netflix.
DeleteReading your review made me glad I was busy last weekend. Netflix at best.
DeleteSo damn disappointing...I had a feeling..I haven't seen it but I was sad that there actually might be a Jim Carrey movie that comes out that I don't like. I hope it's not a sign that he is going to turn out to go down the road of the Sandler.
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't take it too much to heart. It's really more of a Steve Carell movie if anything. But still super disappointing given all the people on board.
DeleteAnd I wouldn't worry about Carrey turning into a Sandler. If the trailer is any indication, he is going to absolutely steal the show in Kick Ass 2. Check it out if you havent!
Watched this movie last night, I thought it was a little better than you did maybe would have given it a 5, but agree with all of your points about the script. It just wasn't a well made movie for the actors. There were a few parts where Jim Carrey had me cracking up, and although Steve Carell got a few laughs out of me ("I will hold my poop for 24 hours" and him doing the magic show without Anton for the first time), he was mostly unfunny the whole movie. I understand your score tho because with this much star power, it should have been so much more than it was.
ReplyDeleteYou'll find I tend to be especially harsh on comedies when they are poor just because I feel like they are more a waste of my time than many other poor-quality movies from other genres (other than horror which is almost always a waste of my time).
DeleteBut either way, it was still pretty disappointing. Thanks for the comment! Keep em coming!
It's sad because horror movies use to be really popular and creative. The first couple Saw movies were good til the ran it into the ground. I'm not really down with the whole "Paranormal Activity" mockumentry thing going on these days. I don't really know about any of these "true stories" that these movies claim to be made after (I think Argo and 2016 give me more suspense and fear from true events than any horror movie). Back in the 80s, they at least actually put a little effort into the horror genre. Now it is a joke for the most part. I can't think of a truly classic horror movie made in the last 10 years.
DeleteI really enjoy the Paranormal Activities, although the last one was certainly the weakest of the bunch. Other than that, I have found that the horror genre is just really not my cup of tea. Even watching some of the classics I don't really enjoy myself. I guess I sometimes just dont see the point in them.
DeleteDefinitely love Argo though haha
